A Federico Blu di Prussia itinerant story through Italy
Fin dal 2019 il progetto personale “Federico Blu di Prussia” ha incluso la proposta di workshop finalizzati alla diffusione della stampa a rilievo in dialogo con altre tecniche grafiche come obiettivo della propria attività. I corsi dedicati ad adulti e ragazzi si sono svolti nel corso degli anni in librerie indipendenti, studi e laboratori di artisti, centri polifunzionali aperti alla comunità e alle possibili contaminazioni del mezzo grafico. Ogni realtà ha contagiato la proposta facendo in modo che ciascun laboratorio fosse declinato in base alla storia, il pubblico e il luogo che accoglieva la proposta.
Since 2019 the personal project "Federico Blu di Prussia" has included the proposal of workshops aimed at the diffusion of relief printing in dialogue with other graphic techniques as the objective of its activity. The courses dedicated to adults and children have been held over the years in independent bookshops, artists' studios and labs, multifunctional centers open to the community and to possible contaminations of the graphic medium. Each reality has infected the proposal by making sure that each laboratory is declined on the basis of the history, the public and the place that welcomes the proposal.
Dal dicembre 2022 Federico Blu di Prussia è membro di People of Print: una community globale di artisti, stampatori, laboratori e residenze che operano principalmente con la stampa in tutte le sue forme. Così come la propria attività, descritta nel blog e presentata nel sito, anche i workshop e gli eventi collegati sono presentati e patrocinati nei social della comunità virtuale. I membri in tutto il mondo ricevono aggiornamenti, avvisi e notifiche sui nuovi corsi di Federico Blu di Prussia seguendo la programmazione in tutta Italia.
Since December 2022 Federico Blu di Prussia has been a member of People of Print: a global community of artists, printers, workshops and residencies that mainly work with print in all its forms. As well as its activity, described in the blog and presented on the site, the related workshops and events are also presented and sponsored in the social networks of the virtual community. Members worldwide receive updates, alerts, and notifications about new Federico Blu di Prussia courses by following the schedule across Italy.
Laboratori e sedi sono scelti in base alla loro vicinanza elettiva, alla sensibilità e attenzione per il mondo editoriale, culturale e sociale. Spesso sono offerte tematiche di partenza per offrire agli iscritti un terreno comune per approcciare sgorbie, fogli e inchiostro e incontrare nuove materie. Le regioni italiane toccate dall’attività formativa sono già tante e ogni volta consolidano amicizie aprendo a nuovi incontri, residenze d’artista, progetti condivise e idee nate chaicchierando al termine di una lezione.
Laboratories and locations are chosen on the basis of their elective proximity, sensitivity and attention to the editorial, cultural and social world. Thematic starting points are often offered to offer members a common ground for approaching gouges, paper and ink and encountering new subjects. There are already many Italian regions affected by the training activity and each time they consolidate friendships by opening up to new meetings, artist residencies, shared projects and ideas born while chatting at the end of a lesson.
NOI Libreria è uno spazio di quartiere a Milano, un presidio culturale e una libreria indipendente attiva settimanalmente con moltissime proposte editoriali ed eventi. Questo cuore pulsante e giovane si è ampliato grazie a NOI artificio: un progetto dedicato alle proposte formative e laboratoriali che ha contaminato anche me nel mio eterno peregrinare lungo la penisola. Con “Come un cassetto da tipografia” sono approdato a proporre un percorso dedicato al fenomeno del Rubber Stamping basandomi sui testi di Nick Morley e Stephen Fowler per sperimentare tutti gli esiti possibili della stampa su carta e tessuto in uno studio attrezzato di tutto punto.
NOI Libreria is a neighborhood space in Milan, a cultural garrison and an independent bookstore active weekly with many editorial proposals and events. This beating and youthful heart has expanded thanks to NOI artificio: a project dedicated to training and workshop proposals that has also contaminated me in my eternal wandering along the peninsula. With “Come un cassetto da tipografia” I have come to propose a path dedicated to the Rubber Stamping phenomenon based on the texts of Nick Morley and Stephen Fowler to experiment with all the possible results of printing on paper and fabric in a fully equipped studio.
Presso il Centro giovanile Tecchio ho avuto il piacere di tenere due cicli di incontri da cinque serate ciascuno che hanno esplorato con appuntamenti tematici la stampa dal disegno, attraverso i protagonisti, gli strumenti, la carta, i pigmenti e le tecniche di stampa. Gli incontri serali e la preparazione dei corsisti hanno rivelato esiti molto dissimili, sono state le “Superfici increspate” titolo dato ai ritrovi, infine raccolti in leporelli o “concertina books” come terreno comune sul quale depositare il prodotto dell’incontro di tante anime sensibili.
At the Centro giovanile Tecchio I had the pleasure of holding two cycles of meetings of five evenings each which explored thematic appointments of printing from drawing, through the protagonists, the tools, the paper, the pigments and the printing techniques. The evening meetings and the preparation of the students revealed very dissimilar results, it was the “Superfici increspate” title given to the meetings, finally collected in leporello or "concertina books" as a common ground on which to deposit the product of the meeting of many sensitive souls .
Manisinistre è un laboratorio specializzato in serigrafia e molte altre tecniche di stampa fondato da Ilaria e Vanessa che aveva già ospitato un’esposizione a tema botanico e nel quale sono arrivato zuppo di pioggia in una giornata uggiosa a Milano. Il workshop dal titolo “Petali fra le pagine” ha coniugato legatoria e timbri in linoleum spingendo ogni partecipante a personalizzare un quaderno come carnet floreale e raccogliere al suo interno disegni, ricordi, appunti visivi per portare con sé un taccuino autocostruito. La copertina era stata composta e stampata con i caratteri mobili provenienti dall’archivio di Tipi Strani.
Manisinistre is a laboratory specialized in screen printing and many other printing techniques founded by Ilaria and Vanessa which had already hosted a botanical-themed exhibition and where I arrived soaked in the rain on a gloomy day in Milan. The workshop entitled “Petali fra le pagine” combined bookbinding and linoleum stamps prompting each participant to customize a notebook as a floral carnet and collect drawings, memories, visual notes inside it to carry a self-made notebook with them. The cover was composed and printed with movable type from the Tipi Strani archive.
Quivirgola libri+studio+idee ha rinnovato un appuntamento natalizio sospeso dalla pandemia che a partire dal primo appuntamento del 2019 è stato rinnovato in una veste mutata nel 2022. “Polvere di cannella e inchiostro sulle dita” è stato il ritorno dove tutto è iniziato, mangiando biscotti e bevendo una tisana calda con sottofondi musicali mentre i soggetti invernali affollavano i tavoli della libreria indipendente di Schio (VI). Tanti timbri in gomma hanno trovato casa in un luogo magico dedicato alla lettura.
Quivirgola libri+studio+idee has renewed a Christmas appointment suspended by the pandemic which starting from the first appointment of 2019 was renewed in a changed guise in 2022. “Polvere di cannella e inchiostro sulle dita” was the return to where it all began, eating biscuits and drinking a hot herbal tea with background music while the winter subjects crowded the tables of the independent bookshop in Schio (VI). Many rubber stamps have found a home in a magical place dedicated to reading.
Pilot Pen Italia ha supportato la realizzazione delle proposte formative fornendomi due astucci brandizzati con una selezione delle loro proposte grafiche. In occasione di ogni workshop i partecipanti hanno potuto contare su brushpen, correttori, indelebili e marker per progettare e sviluppare le proprie idee su carta prima delle fasi di trasporto e stampa.
Pilot Pen Italia supported the creation of the training proposals by providing me with two branded cases with a selection of their graphic proposals. On the occasion of each workshop, the participants were able to count on brushpens, correctors, indelible and markers to design and develop their ideas on paper before the transport and printing stages.
Cranfield Colours e la scelta dei materiali sostenibili ha guidato ogni attività di preparazione dei laboratori ed è stata una tematica cruciale nella presentazione degli elementi necessari per approcciare la stampa in rilievo con consapevolezza e conoscenza dell’impatto. Vista la partecipazione di giovani e ragazzi la diminuzione degli inquinanti è emersa come cruciale e l’esposizione a sostanze nocive è stata abbattuta ricorrendo a soluzioni atossiche.
Cranfield Colours and the choice of sustainable materials guided each activity of preparation of the workshops and was a crucial theme in the presentation of the elements necessary to approach relief printing with awareness and knowledge of the impact. Given the participation of young people and children, the reduction of pollutants has emerged as crucial and exposure to harmful substances has been reduced by resorting to non-toxic solutions.

The paper supports presented bring to the attention FSC® certified supply chains or part of the "Paper from our Echosystem" project by Favini Papers which has aimed for over twenty years at the reuse of textile, agri-food materials or dedicating its production to the use of plants such as the algae of the lagoon or the giant bamboo: a weed species in our country.
I video e artisti presentati nel corso delle serate sono simboli di un approccio moderno attento al panorama contemporaneo che coniuga digitale e analogico come risorse compenetrabili per accostare la stampa in rilievo al graffitismo, alla street art, la textile art, la calligarfia, la cartotecnica, la stampa fotografica e il video mapping. Tutto per mostrare come il linguaggio grafico sia in continuo rinnovamento e si possa intagliare perfettamente senza saper disegnare con matita o pennello.
The videos and artists presented during the evenings are symbols of a modern approach attentive to the contemporary panorama that combines digital and analogue as interpenetrable resources to combine relief printing with graffiti, street art, textile art, calligraphy, paper converting, photographic printing and video mapping. All to show how the graphic language is in continuous renewal and can be carved perfectly without knowing how to draw with pencil or brush.
Ciascun workshop accoglie una selezione bibliografica specifica in base al contenuto del corso connettendo Linocut e Rubber Stamping con legatoria, teoria del clore, serigrafia, arti grafiche. Le guide sono curate dalla progettazione al confezionamento e contengono illustrazioni originali che si presentano come percorso step by step con suggerimenti e consigli da adottare nella realizzazione di timbri e matrici incise, donate a ciascun partecipante.
Each workshop welcomes a specific bibliographic selection based on the course content connecting Linocut and Rubber Stamping with bookbinding, colour theory, screen printing, graphic arts. The guides are curated from design to packaging and contain original illustrations that are presented as a step-by-step path with suggestions and advice to be adopted in the creation of stamps and engraved blocks, donated to each participant.
